You would never know from her new pictures that Sarah was once a frightened and starving stray who eluded a farmer's efforts to catch her. She was living on road kill, surviving in the wild, and the wounds on her body indicated she no doubt was fending off coyotes as well. Finally, the farmer saw her circling a pile of brush and upon investigation he found four newborn puppies. By placing the puppies in a live trap he was able to get Sarah to go into the trap and then took them all to a high kill shelter in rural WV. We rescued them from the shelter and found homes for the babies when they were old enough. At that time, Sarah didn't know people talked to her, unless they were running her off. She didn't know about going for car rides, being petted and having enough to eat. Today she is sweet, silly, playful, rides well in a car, walks on leash, knows that its a good thing when she is being talked to (and even talks back) and is housetrained. She loves to ride in the car and excitedly heads for the gate when we put her harness on. All she needs now is a forever home to call her own.
Bluetick hounds make wonderful family pets. Like most other house dogs, they are affectionate, playful and sometimes even act silly. Contrary to some archaic beliefs, Coonhounds do not need to be starved, isolated out back, left unaltrered, and only good for hunting. A healthy, well fed, socialized, spayed or neutered, indoor Coonhound still has a functional NOSE and an innate passion to hunt. This passion creates the need for a fenced yard or a master dedicated to keeping her on leash when outside so she doesn't wander into the path of a car or into someone else's yard while hunting for whatever hunters hunt.
Adoption fee of $200 for Sarah helps with the cost of spay, shots, heartworm/lyme disease test, worming, flea/tick preventative, transportation to meet new family.
